The winners of the 2023 European Film Awards were announced live from Berlin, Germany on Saturday 9th December, with Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall receiving a number of major accolades, including Best European Film.

The European Film Academy announced 11 different films from as many as 10 different countries as winners across a wide range of categories, whilst also honouring a number of individuals for their contributions to the form. English actress Vanessa Redgrave was honoured with the European Lifetime Achievement award, with Spanish film director Isabel Coixet being rewarded for European Achievement in World Cinema.

Anatomy of a Fall was the most celebrated of the stacked line-up of films, winning the award for Best European Film over fellow nominees Fallen Leaves, Green Border, Me Captain and The Zone of Interest, as well as picking up awards for European Director, European Screenwriter, European Editing, and European Actress, the latter of which was won by Sandra Hüller who was nominated twice in the category for Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

The awards ceremony was streamed live and in full via the European Film Awards website, with replays still available.

The European Film Academy has revealed its nominees for the 36th European Film Awards (EFAs), with Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall being celebrated across most categories.

Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning thriller, Anatomy of a Fall, is nominated across four categories: European Film, Directing, Lead Actress (Sandra Hüller), Screenwriting. Glazer’s The Zone of Interest has been nominated across the five leading categories: European Film, Directing, Lead Actress (Sandra Hüller), Lead Actor (Christian Friedel), Screenwriting.

British actors Josh O’Connor and Mia McKenna-Bruce were nominated in the acting categories, with the former playing the lead role in Alice Rohrwacher’s drama La Chimera and the latter being the focus of Molly Manning Walker’s acclaimed debut How to Have Sex (itself nominated for 13 British Independent Film Awards).

Aki Kaurismäki’s Finnish drama Fallen Leaves was also nominated across all five eligible categories announced.

The 2023 European Film Awards will take place live from Berlin, Germany on 9th December 2023.

The 33rd annual European Film Awards were presented live from Berlin, Germany on Saturday 12th December 2020, by German television host Steven Gätjen, with Danish drama Another Round starring Mads Mikkelsen dominating in the major categories.

The 2020 event was due to take place from Reykjavík, Iceland, but was instead moved to a television studio in Berlin, with the nominees discovering their fates via Zoom call. Heading up the competition for Another Round on the night were the Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi and the critically lauded Martin Eden, with German films Undine and Berlin Alexanderplatz each featuring prominently.

New Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, 2012) film Another Round was the winner in each of the ceremony’s most celebrated categories, earning wins for European Film, European Director, European Screenwriter and European Actor.

New Martin Scorsese film The Irishman opened to a viewing audience of 17.1million people in its opening week on Netflix following its release on 27th Nov, a figure equatable to $155million at the North American box office, some $20million more than Scorsese’s biggest box office hit The Departed. Neilsen (the agency that reports such figures) have noted that of the 13million viewers on the release day of the film, only 18% watched the film in its entirety (though this is actually better than any of Netflix’s other top hits, including El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie and the service’s biggest-ever hit Bird Box).

New DC/Warner Bros project The Batman, from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes screenwriter-director Matt Reeves, has cast Garden State, Green Lantern and An Education character actor Peter Sarsgaard. Though the role Sarsgaard has been given is currently under wraps, suggestions are being made that the actor could be set to play the role of Harvey “Two Face” Dent.

A new Planet of the Apes movie is being developed at Disney, who now own the rights to the property following their purchase of 20th Century Fox earlier this year. The film, which will be overseen by the director of The Maze Runner 1, 2 & 3 Wes Ball, is suspected to be a franchise reboot, though details are currently unclear in this regard.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel is in the works at Disney, with the director of the franchise’s original film from 1989, Joe Johnston, being lined up to direct. The project was apparently pitched to Disney by Beauty and the Beast and Frozen star Josh Gad earlier this year, and will reportedly see the actor fill the role of Wayne Szalinksi’s (Rick Moranis’) son.

A sequel to 2018 Christmas movie The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell is heading to Netflix in 2020, with the first movie’s producer, Home Alone and Harry Potter 1 & 2 director Chris Columbus stepping into the director’s chair. Hollywood star Goldie Hawn, the real-life wife of star Kurt Russell, has also been confirmed to be playing the role of Mrs. Claus.


The new Ghostbusters film, set to be directed by the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman, has been given a full title ahead of its Summer 2020 release date: Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Disney have sent out recommendations to movie theaters/cinemas asking them to warn viewers of prolonged flashing light sequences in their upcoming Lucasfilm release Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix has been named the PETA Person of the Year 2019 for promoting welfare rights to animals in trouble. The annual European Film Awards (EFAs) were hosted from the German capital Berlin on Saturday 7th December 2019, with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning dark comedy The Favourite winning big.

The period dramady won both the European Film and European Comedy awards, while also winning big in a number of individual categories to top the list of most wins with an unforeseen eight awards overall.

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas was also honoured during the event with the award for European Actor for his performance in Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory), in a ceremony headlined by Werner Herzog and Juliette Binoche who earned the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and the European Achievement in World Cinema award respectively.

Iconic actor James Dean is to be resurrected via CGI to star in an upcoming war film from directors Anton Ernst and Tati Golykh titled Finding Jack. The production will use old footage and photography to create a full body render of the famed star of Rebel Without A Cause who died in a car accident in 1955.

The Scream franchise is being resurrected by Spyglass Entertainment. According to sources at Bloody Disgusting, Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group is developing a new film without Scream 1, 2 & 4 screenwriter Kevin Williamson, the rumoured screenwriter for the new project being Blade, Batman Begins and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice screenwriter David S. Goyer. It is unknown whether the new film will be a reboot or a new entry into the pre-existing film canon (of which every entry has thus far been directed by the since deceased Wes Craven).

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has signed on to direct Newsflasha biographical drama about legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite that is set to star Star Trek and Wonder Woman actor Chris Pine. The film is to be set on the day Cronkite must report the assassination of President Kennedy.

Anchorman, The Big Short and Vice director Adam McKay has signed a first-look film deal with Paramount Pictures. The screenwriter-director-producer and his production company Hyperobject Industries will, at least for the foreseeable future, give Paramount first-refusal rights to any feature project they put together. McKay has a similar deal for TV, streaming and podcasts with Warner Bros. owned HBO.

Jurassic Park and Thor: Ragnarok star Jeff Goldblum this week moved to defend Woody Allen against decades old allegations of sexual assault against a minor, stating in an interview with i that there “is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty” and that he “would consider working with” the director again following a minor role in Allen’s 1977 film Annie Hall.

French director Christophe Ruggia, who was recently accused of the sexual assault of Portrait of a Lady on Fire star Adele Haenel when she was just a minor, has released a statement to the same publication the actress first went on record with her experience, stating: “The adulation and hope that I placed in her may have seemed, given her young age, troublesome at certain moments. If that is the case and if she is willing, then I ask her to accept my apology.” He also affirmed to have “never engaged in the physical gestures and sexual harassment”.

French-Polish director Roman Polanski has been accused of rape by French actress Valentine Monnier, who claims the filmmaker behind Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown and The Pianist assaulted her in a ski chalet in Switzerland in 1975 when she was 18 years old. The director won’t be charged as France has a 20-year statute of limitations, but this latest accusation fuels the backlash the filmmaker continues to face for his suspected rape of a 13 year old girl in 1975; the trial for which his refusal to attend still makes him a wanted criminal in the United States.

The nominees for the 32nd European Film Awards have been revealed, with the controversial Roman Polanski among the most celebrated of nominees with his new film An Officer and A Spy earning Best Film, Best Screenwriter and Best Director nominations for the awards show set to take place in Berlin on 7th December 2019.

Elsewhere, Yorgos Lanthimos’ UK-set The Favourite is a front-runner in a number of major categories, as is Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory and The Film Magazine’s 24/24 rated Celine Sciamma drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Disney and Sony have reached an agreement to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a new deal jointly announced Friday (27th Sept), it was revealed that Kevin Feige will produce the 3rd Spidey instalment in exchange for 25% of profits and a retention of total merchandising rights for Disney, while Holland will also be able to appear in Disney-Marvel central universe films.

Jonah Hill and Jeffrey Wright are reportedly in advanced negotiations to join Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ upcoming DC/Warner Bros. project The Batman. The European Audiovisual Observatory have revealed that Amazon are the biggest purveyors of European cinema outside of Europe. The study, conducted by Ampere Analysis, indicates that the brand currently offers twice as many European titles as its closest competitor Netflix at 3,281 in total.

The Hollywood Reporter have learned that the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, is developing a Star Wars movie. The man who oversaw the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the Disney banner is being moved across to the Disney-owned Lucasfilm for an unknown project while Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy focuses on the ever-growing franchise’s most forthcoming releases.

Disney head Bob Iger has revealed in his new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company” that Star Wars creator George Lucas “felt betrayed” by The Force Awakens as he had expected Disney to use the story ideas he had sold to them as part of their purchase of Star Wars production company Lucasfilm. Iger recalls that Lucas exclaimed “there’s nothing new” upon hearing of the distributor’s new plans.

Joker director Todd Phillips has rebuffed criticism of his new movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, as one that glorifies violence in an interview with The Wrap, saying ““what’s outstanding to me in this discourse in this movie is how easily the far left can sound like the far right when it suits their agenda. Rob Cohen, the director of the likes of The Fast and the Furious (2001), xXx (2002) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) has been accused of sexual assault by a woman of the pseudonym Jane in an article published by The Huffington Post. Jane claims that the filmmaker sexually assaulted her in a hotel room in an act that started while she was unconscious. This allegation follows a similar report from the director’s own daughter, Valkyrie Weather, which claims Cohen sexually assaulted her as a child.

Robert Garrison, the actor who played Tommy in Karate Kid (1984), has passed away aged 59. The actor, who was also a part of the Karate Kid sequel Karate Kid: Part II (1986) and the 2019 YouTube return series ‘Cobra Kai’ (2019) is survived by his brother and sister-in-law.

The icon of cult horror cinema and the star of such Rob Zombie hits as House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects was announced to have passed away by his wife Suzie Haig on Monday 23rd September. The nominees for the 2018 European Film Awards have been announced, with Pawel Pawlikowski’s deeply personal black and white film Cold War being the leading nominee after scoring 5 nominations across the European Film, Director, Actress, Actor and Screenwriter categories. BorderDogman and Happy As Lazzaro have each been nominated four times.

British actor Rupert Everett is represented in the Actor category for his work on The Happy Prince while The Breadwinner is represented in the European Animated Feature Film category.
